השבת נקרא על מכת החושך, ונאמר במכה הזאת: "ולא ראו איש את אחיו, ואל קמו איש מתחתיו"; יתכן שהמצב בו איננו רואים את האחר מרוב פחד וחרדה, גם עלול לשתק אותנו; ואולי בא הדבר ללמדנו שסופו של המשפיל והמדכא, מחוסר יכולת להביט בפניו של המושפל והמשועבד, שיהיה משותק מרוב פחד.
