לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,
מחר נקרא על הפרה האדומה כגורם האולטימטיבי של היטהרות וגם על נחש הנחושת כגורם אולטימטיבי של ריפוי. קריאה פשטנית עלולה להוביל אותנו לאמונה בכוחות מגיים הטמונים באפר הפרה ובנחש הנחושת, אך חז"ל שהיו מודעים לסכנה הטמונה בעבודה זרה לימדו אותנו שהנחש אינו ממית ואינו מרפא ושגם באפר הפרה אין כל סגולה מהותית המטהרת את הטמא - הרי היא גם מטמאת את הכהן המטהר... - אלא כל הטקסים האלו מצריכים "הסתכלות כלפי מעלה", כלומר התבוננות האדם במה שמעבר, ורק הסתכלות של אדם מעבר לגורמים המשעבדים והמנכרים עשויים לטהר, כלומר לשחרר אותו מהשקיעה במוות, ולרפא, כלומר: להפוך אותו לאחראי לחייו.

Dear Family and Friends,
Tomorrow we'll read about the Red Heifer (Para Aduma) as the ultimate purifier and about the Copper Snake as the ultimate "antidote" against snake bites.
At first reading we could believe that he Red Heifer and the Copper Snake have magic qualities of purification and healing.
Our Sages were aware of this superstitious inclination and taught us to read these sections in a different way;
All depends on the Moral and Spiritual attitude of the person who wants to be purified or healed.
Maybe this teaches us that purity and health are manifestations of freedom and human dignity.
