מגילת אסתר כטקסט של התנגדות אמיצה לסדר הקיים - The Hidden God

לבני משפחתנו, לחברותינו ולחברינו היקרים,

כידוע, מגילת אסתר היא ספר ש'אין בו אלוהים' – בניגוד לרוב רובם של כתבי הקודש, שמו של הקב"ה אינו מופיע בו.

בספר זה האל מסתיר את פניו ונותן לבני אדם לנהל את חייהם ואת מאבקיהם ללא התערבותו. ואולי גם החלק האלוהי באדם מסתתר ונרמז בו בין היתר ע"י נכונותה של אסתר, גיבורת הספר, לסכן את מעמדה ואת חייה כדי להציל את בני עמה.

אולי החלק האלוהי הוא האומץ לסכן נוחות ומעמד כדי להגן על החלש והנרדף מפני העריצות השלטונית.

Dear Family and Friends,

G!d's name doesn't appear in Megillat Esther; It’s a "godless" book, unlike most books of the Bible.

In this book, G!d hides his face and doesn't interfere in human affairs and conflicts.

 Maybe this book generally lacks "divine" parts of men, with the exception of some hints; Esther is prepared to sacrifice her status and her life, in order to save her people.

Maybe the "divine" part (G!d's image) of human beings resides in our readiness to endanger our personal comfort in order to protect the persecuted and discriminated people.

Dear Family and Friends,

Tomorrow, in addition to theregular Torah Section (Vayikra) we'll read "Zachor". We heave the obligation to "exterminate""Amalek". We have to acknowledge that Amalek today isn't a specific ethnic entity; it's he Absolute Evil, it's the inclination to take advantage of somebody's weakness and there is no person or nation or group has monopoly over this inclination, nor is anybody entirely "clean" from this tendency; it's a permanent struggle.

הטרנצנדנטיות אינה תלויה במקום, היא תלויה בנו - Existential Transcendence

בני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,

לסיפור המפורט  על הקמת המשכן, מקדימה התורה כמה פסוקים על השבת. ואולי בא הדבר ללמדנו שאם המשכן הוא ניסיון של יצירת קדושה (מימד טרנצנדנטי) במרחב וניסיון זה תלוי מקום ובאפשרות ליצור את המרחב, השבת איננה תלויה במרחב ובמקום, ולכן מאפשרת לנו ליצור את המימד הזה בזמן, בכל מקום.

Dear Family and Friends,

Before the Torah tells us the detailed story of the Mishkan (Sanctuary of the Desert), we read a few verses about the Shabbat.

Maybe this teaches us that the Mishkan, representing a human effort to experience a Transcendent Dimension in Space, needs the appropriate Place. Shabbat is our option to create and experience Transcendence in Time, and this can be achieved anytime and anywhere.

האם אהרון, בניגוד למשה ברדתו מההר, היה מחובר וקשוב לעם והבין שעם העבדים שיצא זה עתה ממצרים אינו בשל לאל מופשט תובעני, ולכן שיתף פעולה עם הלהט הדתי של בניית עגל הזהב? או שמא הוא  היה מנהיג חלש ופופוליסטי, שלא היה מסוגל להוביל ונאלץ להיכנע? 

דומני שהגבול בין פופוליזם והקשבה יכול לעתים להיטשטש ומריכה יכולת הבחנה חדה ורגישה

Dear Family and Friends,

When Moshe saw the people of Israel dancing around the golden calf, he broke the Tablets of Testimony (Luchot Haberith) and threw them down. I didn't see any commentator blaming Moshe for doing this; on the contrary: the Midrash and Rashi are praising him.

Maybe this teaches us that any concrete object, even if "G'd's script is engraved on it", shouldn't be an object of adoration and worship; There isn't anything in this world - no person, no stone, no grave, no land, no building - that can be considered Holy; holiness cannot be perceived with our senses, since it's something we cannot possess, control or reach. We can try to be as human as possible, contribute to a more human society and hence strive as much as possible towards the Unreachable Other.

בלבבי משכן אבנה - Heaven is Here

לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,

הפרשות שאנו קוראים  בשבועות אלו  עוסקות במשכן, בכליו ובבגדי כהונה, ה"מקדש" הזמני שהקימו בני ישראל במדבר.

הקמת המשכן (וגם בשלב מאוחר יותר בית המקדש) מעלה שאלה קשה: האם ניתן לצמצם את האלוהות במרחב, בממדים אנושיים?

ואולי דווקא מכיוון שאי אפשר, עלינו ליצור מימד רוחני טרנצנדנטי בתוך עצמנו וביחסינו עם אחרים, כי "לא בשמים היא".

Dear Family and Friends

 The Torah Sections we are reading during this period are dealing with  the Tabernacle, the temporary Sanctuary of the Desert.

This raises the question about the possibility of confining Divine Providence into human dimensions, or maybe it challenges us to perceive and establish spirituality within ourselves and in our relationship with others, not in Heaven.

חכמה בגויים, תאמין - Yitro's trigger for transformation

לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,

הפרשה שנקרא מחר נקראת על שם "גוי", יתרו כהן מדין, חותנו של משה. איש הדת הנכרי הזה מחזיר את בתו, צפורה, אשת משה וילדיה למשה "אחר שלוחיה". על הדרך, נכנס יתרו לתפקיד של "יועץ ארגוני". היש כאן התערבות מדיינית זרה? ועוד בפרשה בה כתובים עשרת הדברות?

האם זה בא ללמדנו שהקשר עם שוחרי הטוב שבעולם מפרה אותנו ומשביח אותנו?

  Dear Family and  Friends,

Our Sages consider Yitro, Moshe's father in law, as a proselyte and discuss what made him join Moshe and the Jewish people; was it the splitting of the Red Sea, the war with Amalek, or the giving of the Torah?

Maybe this actually raises the question about  what could attract people and motivate them  to change their routine and their life; miraculous events, the victory over the Evil or spiritual search leading to some kind of Revelation; on the other side, what is our identity today that could be attractive for people in search for Truth?

Are we agents of Intellectual, Moral and Spiritual Search? Are we fighting the Evil (outside and inside?), are we experiencing spectacular miracles?

פשבן

פריחה , תקווה ואמונה Blossoming and Faith

לבני משפחתנו, לחברותינו ולחברינו היקרים,

מחר, בפרשת בשלח, נקרא את 'שירת הים'. 'קריעת ים סוף' מסמלת אולי כל מכשול הנראה  לכאורה בלתי עביר בין המקום בו אנחנו נמצאים לבין המקום בו עלינו להיות, כדי להיות לגמרי בני חורין.

לעתים קרובות, פרשה זו נקראת בט"ו בשבט, ראש השנה לאילנות, כאשר 'השקדיה פורחת' ונוהגים לאכול מפרי ארצנו.

אולי "צירוף מקרים" זה עשוי ללמדנו שכדי שנוכל להעריך את 'פריחת השקדיות' ולהאמין שגם הפירות יגיעו, דרושה אמונה ביכולתנו לעבור את הים, ולא לטבוע בו.

שבת שלום ותהיה שנה טובה לאילנות ולכולנו

Tomorrow, among other chapters, we'll read "Shirat HaYam"- the 'Son gof  the Sea'; maybe  'crossing the sea' symbolizes every apparently insurmountable obstacle between where we are and where we want to be, or where we have to be in order to be really free.

Very often, the reading of this Passage coincides with "Tu biShvat", the "New Year of the Trees", when we celebrate the fruits of the Promised Land and when the almond trees start blossoming.

Maybe this 'coincidence"  can teach us that in order to be able to appreciate the blossoming of trees and believe that there will be fruit on the trees, you have to believe in 'crossing the sea', in overcoming apparently insurmountable obstacle.

Shabbat Shalom and  let us all be able to enjoy the trees and the fruit of the land.
