According to our tradition, after leaving Egypt, the Sons of Israel crossed the Red Sea on the Seventh Day of Pessach and the Egyptians who tried to stop them "were swamped in the middle of the sea… on that day, God rescued the Israelites from Egypt. The Israelites saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore".

One of the reasons for not chanting Hallel entirely on the Seventh Day of Pessach is related to the death of the Egyptians.

Maybe this teaches us that we should relate to Liberation and Redemption in a complex and dialectic way: Happiness and Joy about our Freedom, together with empathy and sorrow about the price our enemies paid for this liberation and victory.

לפי המסורת, עברו בני ישראל את הים ביבשה בשביעי של פסח והמצרים שרדפו אחריהם טבעו בים.

אחת הסיבות המובאות לאמירת הלל בדילוג (חצי הלל) בשביעי של פסח היא כדי למהול את שמחתנו בצער על מות המצרים ובלשון חז"ל: "מעשי ידי טובעים בים, ואתם אומרים שירה!"

אולי ניתן ללמוד מכך שיש לאמץ עמדה מורכבת ודיאלקטית לחרותנו ולנצחוננו; לצד השמחה על ההצלה, השחרור והנצחון, יש לחנך לאמפתיה ולצער על המחיר ששילמו אויבינו למען חרותנו.
