היום חגגנו יום הולדת 60 למדינת ישראל; איגרא רמה? בירא עמיקתא?

כנראה שהמציאות הישראלית מעמידה בפנינו תמונה קוטבית:

מחד גיסא – ראש ממשלה הנחקר על עברות שוחד חמורות, נשיא לשעבר החשוד בעבירות מין.

מאידך גיסא - אנשי מעלה בתחום המדע, הרוח, האומנות והעשייה החברתית , ביניהם פרופ' דוד וייס הלבני, אוד מוצל מאש, ואחרים, המקבלים את פרס ישראל כהוקרה עבור השגיהם הרבים. אולי קוטביות זו קיימת גם בין הציווי המתחיל את הפרשה שקראנו בשבוע שעבר - "קדושים תהיו" - לבין העיסוק בטומאת הכהנים בפרשת "אמור" אותה נקרא מחר. אנו נעים כמטוטלת בין הרצון להוקיע את הכיעור בחברה הישראלית המעלה את השאלה הנוקבת: ":האם לנער הזה התפללנו?" לבין הרצון, הלגיטימי לא פחות לשמוח על עצם קיומה של מדינה עצמאית, על הישגיה בתחומים רבים ועל הפוטנציאל הטמון בה.

A 60-years old Jewish Independent State is definitely an important historical event; our parents and grandparents hardly dreamt about the possibility of something like that happening. Is it the ideal Jewish State we dreamt about? Is it the first stage of Messianic Redemption? Not necessarily, and maybe we aren't able yet to understand its significance in History; there is still a lot to achieve, but, nevertheless, there are many reasons to look back and celebrate the potential of freedom and independence.

This year, Yom Haatzmaut occurs between "Kedoshim Tihyu" ( literally: "You shall be Holy", but maybe the meaning should be: You shall strive towards holiness) and "Emor", dealing with the obligation of Kohanim to avoid impurity. Maybe this corresponds to the polar Israeli reality: Suspicion about severe corruption and misbehavior of PM and former President versus extraordinary achievements in the field of Science, Literature, Art, Social Action and Talmudic Research.
