אחרי מותו של יעקב, חששו אחי יוסף שהוא לא ממש סלח להם על זריקתו לבור ועל מכירתו ושהוא מתכוון לנקום בהם. יתכן שחשש זה דומה לחשש של יעקב מפני המפגש עם עשיו.
הם אפילו סיפרו לו שאביהם ציווה עליו לסלוח להם, דבר שכנראה לא קרה מעולם.
חשש זה עורר את בכיו של יוסף בפעם השניה.
