According to some commentators, since only the Egyptians were afflicted by the 'darkness', everywhere, it meant that something was interfering between their eyes and the outside world and therefore they weren't able to 'see' each other.
Maybe this emotional and moral blindness, the inability to see "the other", affects every oppressor at a certain stage and reaches its peak when people don’t see their brothers or even themselves. The Israelites reached the stage of liberation, when they were able to see each other and even, according to some commentators provide food to the "blind" Egyptians.
