והיה כי תבוא אל הארץ- הקץ לעבדות ולהתקרבנות - ראשיתה של אחריות בוגרת - Entering the promised land - a Challenge of Maturity

לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו  היקרים,

הפרשה שנקרא בשבת  מתחילה במילים "והיה כי תבוא אל הארץ" והמצווה הראושנה המוזכרת בה היא מצוות הביכורים. לצד הבאת הביכורים, אנחנו גם מצווים לספר את הסיפור של היציאה מעבדות לחירות. פרשה זו מסתיימת במילים: ושמחת בכל הטוב אשר נתן לך ה' אלהיך ולביתך, אתה והלוי והגר אשר בקרבך.

ואולי בא הדבר ללמדנו שעם כנסיתנו לארץ, עלינו להבין ששוחררנו מעבדות, שאנחנו בני חורין, לא עבדים ולא קרבנות; עלינו להודות ולשמוח על כך ולדעת שאנחנו אחראים לרווחתם ולשמחתם של כל תושביה.

Dear Family and Friends,

Towards the end of the Book of Devarim, the end of the Year, and the end of the annual cycle of Torah reading, Moshe continues with some important recommendations to the People of Israel, before they will enter the Promised Land. At an emotional level, he behaves like a parent who knows he won't be there any more to see if the children will be faithful to his vision an behave according to his teaching.

Here specifically, it appears that  by  entering the Promised Land, people may become selfish and take everything they "own", "acquire" or "accomplish" for granted, without being grateful and taking care of the less privileged parts of society.

Probably this teaches that sometimes the solidarity existing in a minority group is challenged by an independent State; maybe it's easier to be faithful to moral values in the "desert", where there is no private property; creating a moral and caring society is a challenge.
