לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,
אתמול, תוך כדי הצפירה לזכר חללי השואה, חשבתי על מושג הדומיה, נזכרתי במילים "לך דומיה תהילה" וגם בתגובתו של אהרון, אחרי מות שני בניו, שם נאמר: "וידום אהרון". פרשנים שונים דנו במשמעות אותה דומיה. אחד מפרשני המקרא, רשב"ם, נכדו של רש"י, רואה קשר בין אותה דומיה של אהרון לקדושה ואכן, בפרשה שנקרא מחר מצווה עלינו התורה: "קדושים תהיו". האם יש באפשרותנו להיות קדושים? ידוע לי שיש אינפלציה בתארים "קדוש ו"גאון"וכו', אך אני נוטה לחשוב שבני אדם אינם קדושים ואינם יכולים להיות קדושים במובן הרגיל של מילה זו. יתכן שהקדושה (טרנסצנדנציה) האפשרית או לפחות השאיפה לקדושה היא תהליך של התמודדות בוגרת עם רגשות קשים של כעס, של נקמה ולקיחת אחריות על העתיד. דומני שדבריו הנוקבים של סגן הרמטכ"ל הם דוגמה להתבוננות בוגרת ואחראית על החיבור בין השואה הנוראה לבין אחריותנו במדינתנו הריבוונית

Dear Family and Friends,
A 68 -years old Jewish Independent State is definitely an important historical event; our parents and grandparents hardly dreamt about the possibility of something like that happening. Is it the ideal Jewish State we dreamt about? Is it the first stage of Messianic Redemption? Not necessarily, and maybe we aren't able yet to understand its significance in History; there is still a lot to achieve, but, nevertheless, there are many reasons to look back and celebrate the potential of freedom and independence.
This year, Yom Haatzmaut occurs between "Kedoshim Tihyu" ( literally: "You shall be Holy", but maybe the meaning should be: You shall strive towards holiness) and "Emor", dealing with the obligation of Kohanim to avoid impurity. Maybe this corresponds to the polar Israeli reality: corruption and misbehavior of former PM and former President and other politicians and public figures, versus extraordinary achievements in the field of Science, Literature, Art, Social Action and Talmudic Research.
