Our Tradition is to donate a symbolic "machatzit hashekel" (1/2 Shekel) on Purim, and that's also the section we'll read tomorrow. It may reflect the idea that you need somebody else to complete your "half", that you are part of a community, and that some important projects need a collective endeavour in order to be fulfilled. Nevertheless, sometimes social pressure can lead to worship the "golden calf" and maybe collective solidarity doesn't exempt you from individual choice and responsibility.
