לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,
מחר, בפרשת "קדושים", אחד מהציווים של קדושה הוא: "ואהבת לרעך כמוך". רבי עקיבא אמר על מצוה זו : זה "כלל גדול בתורה". בן עזאי, לעומתו אמר: "זה ספר תולדות אדם" כלל גדול מזה. מיהו הרֵע אליו מתייחסת התורה? חלק מהפרשנים חושבים שמדובר בכל אדם, לאו דווקא יהודי. האם התורה דורשת מאיתנו לאהוב את הרֵע כפי שאנחנו אוהבים את עצמנו? או שמא יש לקרוא "לרֵעך (שהוא) כמוך" - כלומר כולנו שווים כבני אדם. יחד עם זאת, מובלעת כאן הנחה שכדי לאהוב, אנחנו חייבים גם לאהוב את עצמנו.

Dear Family and Friends,
One of the well known commandments of "Sanctity" is: "Veahavta lere'acha kamocha"; the usually known translations is: "You shall love thy neighbor as yourself". This is questionable, since:
1. Re'a is not neighbor; it's more like "friend" or "colleague"
2. To love somebody else the way you love yourself seems to be very hard, if not impossible.
Therefore, most likely it should be translated "you'll love your "neighbor" who is "kamocha", equal or similar to you". This of course also raises the question about the ability to love others if you don't love yourself and also who should be considered "similar" or "equal" to you.
