לבני משפחתנו, חברותינו וחברינו היקרים,
פרשני המקרא אינם תמימי דעים לגבי סדר האירועים בפרשות שאנו קוראים בשבתות אלו; האם הקמת המשכן קדמה לחטא העגל (לפי סדר קריאת הפרשות), או שמא נבנה המשכן אחרי חטא העגל. אם נאמר שהעגל קדם לציווי על הקהמת המשכן, הרי משמש המשכן מעין התחשבות בדיעבד עם הצורך של עם בייצוג קונקרטי כדי לחוש קרבת אלהים; לעומת זאת, אם הציווי על הקמת המשכן קדם לחטא העגל, אומרת לנו התורה שהניסיון למקם את הקדושה (את הטרסצנדנטי) בייצוג קונקרטי מוביל לפטישיזם דתי ולייחוס קדושה לעצמים, מבנים, אדמה.

Dear Family and Friends,
When Moshe saw the people of Israel dancing around the golden calf, he broke the Tablets of Testimony (Luchot Haberith) and threw them down. I didn't see any commentator blaming Moshe for doing this; on the contrary: the Midrash and Rashi are praising him.
Maybe this teaches us that any concrete object, even if "G'd's script is engraved on it", shouldn't be an object of adoration and worship; There isn't anything in this world - no person, no stone, no grave, no land, no building - that can be considered Holy; holiness cannot be perceived with our senses, since it's something we cannot possess, control or reach. We can try to be as human as possible, contribute to a more human society and hence strive as much as possible towards the Unreachable Other.
