Human society – or more specifically ; the survivors of the Flood – experienced a trauma. People and societies react to traumatic experiences in different ways.

Noach, maybe because he felt guilty about his survival and didn’t (unlike Avraham) argue about the destruction of the entire human world, got drunk.

The entire human society became "one nation", "unified" under a totalitarian regime, where humanity can got lost and humankind had to be dispersed all over the world, in order to enable diversity of cultures .

What does that teach us about appropriate coping with traumatic events?

Shabbat Shalom and Hodesh Tov to all,

Tomorrow we start a new cycle of Torah-reading with "Bereishit". Rashi and others ask: if the Torah has to teach us, Jews, how to behave , what’s the purpose of starting with the Story of Creation and other stories of Bereishit?

Rashi's answer is well known, but maybe we could find another meaning in accordance with the Mishna (Sanhedrin 4, 5): We all belong to the posterity of descendants of the same Human Being, created to G!d's image. This teaches us, at the very beginning that there should not be any discrimination between human beings and this principle lies at the basis of the entire Torah.

Shabbat Shalom to all,

Tomorrow, at least in Israel, we celebrate "Simchat Torah"; it's curious that the original Chag, Shemini Atzeret, is hardly mentioned, as if "Simchat Torah", a relatively recent Holiday "swallowed" it.

Are we celebrating the End of an annual cycle of Torah-reading, or maybe we are happy about "starting again" immediately?

Maybe this teaches us that in order to be happy about the "past", the past has to engender a future, there has to be continuity.

Let us have many opportunities of renewal in Torah and in Life.

Chag Sameach and Shana Tova to all

On Rosh HaShana the World and all its inhabitants are on trial; Yom Kippur is a unique occasion of Reflection, Repentance, Mercy, Purificationand Renewal . At Sukkot, we are dealing with our more specific national narrative; it's all about 40 years of uncertainty in the desert, challenging our faith and illustrating the long way and journey between liberation from slavery and the Promised Land. Even more: on Sukkot, we are worried about the amount of rain we'll have during the year; even the Promised Land isn't guaranteed and cannot be taken for granted. We have to remember the Desert as an expression of humility and an antidote against hubris and possessiveness.

Chag Sameach to all of you.

Yom Kippur starts with "Kol Nidrei" – a prayer without any Halachic meaning and status. Just before starting Kol Nidrei, we include and invite all people to join our prayers, without paying attention to their level of "frumkeit".

Probably this introduction helps us creating an open atmosphere, an atmosphere of forgiveness and purification.

Let this Yom Kippur be an opportunity to enhance our capacity to ask forgiveness and to forgive.

Dear Family and Friends,

In our Tradition, Rosh HaShana is the "Day of Judgment"; this tradition has its roots in the Mishna.

Maybe this concept of Judgment teaches us humility, by reflecting intensively on the idea that many important events (like life and death) are beyond our control.

Shana Tova and best wishes to all,

This Shabbat, the last Shabbat of this year, we'll read "Lo Bashamayim hee" – "It (the Torah) is not in Heaven". Many Commentators have dealt with that expression. A well known Talmudic story tells us about a Halachic dispute in which one of our Sages tries to convince the audience with heavenly signs, but finally, after another of our Sages stood up and exclaimed: It's not in heaven; decisions have to be taken by the (human) majority, G!d laughed and said: My children have overruled me, my children have overruled me.

Does that teach us that as human beings, we have to assume our own responsibility on our actions and not rely on heavenly signs?

Shabbat Shalom to all,
